Books take a long time to write

And while 'write like nobody’s watching' sounds nice in theory… it can also feel a little lonely when nobody actually is

Most writers don't just want to write

They want readers, relationships, opportunities and a sense of belonging in the literary world

The trouble is that books are a very slow way of getting many of those things

Which is why writers often find themselves thinking:

'I wish more people knew about my work.'

'I want evidence this is going somewhere.'

'I thought more things would be happening by now.'

Because what most writers want isn't just publication

They want a writing life that feels expansive before the book comes out, between books, and beyond them

Stop waiting for the book to do all the work

A lot of writers believe that once their book is finished, everything else will follow.

The readers, opportunities, invitations

The sense that things are finally happening

Sometimes that happens

But many of the most meaningful parts of a writing career grow from things that happen around the book.

The unexpected introduction.

The side project that takes on a life of its own.

The opportunity you didn't see coming.

The interest that turns into something bigger.

Because opportunities don't always go to the most talented writer

They often go to the writer people know exists

The one whose work people have encountered

Whose perspective they recognise

Whose name they've heard before

Creative Breadcrumbs

Inside Main Character Energy, we’ll explore what I call Creative Breadcrumbs.

Small public traces of your humour, perspective, curiosities and obsessions.

Things like:

  • observations
  • newsletters
  • interviews
  • niche fascinations
  • tiny storytelling experiments

Not content for content's sake

The things people remember you for while the bigger projects are still taking shape

Main Character Energy is a 5-week program for writers who don't want all their creative hopes resting on a single slow-moving project

This is for writers who:

  • want readers to actually know they exist before and between publications
  • have ideas, interests and stories they're not currently sharing
  • feel like they're spending years working on something no one else can see
  • want to create opportunities instead of waiting for them
  • don't want publication to be the only time they feel visible
  • are tired of waiting for publication to make things happen

What we'll explore over 5 weeks

WEEK 1 — STOP HIDING

Ambition, comparison and the stories writers tell themselves about putting themselves out there. Why wanting more isn't the problem, and how fear of judgement can keep writers playing smaller than they need to.

WEEK 2 — CREATIVE BREADCRUMBS

Perfectionism, overthinking and learning to share before things feel finished.

How to create public traces of your humour, perspective, curiosities and obsessions.

WEEK 3 — MAKING THINGS PEOPLE REMEMBER

Humour, storytelling, interviews, newsletters and public-facing creativity.

Exploring the kinds of ideas and projects that help readers recognise, remember and reconnect with your work.

WEEK 4 — PARTICIPATION OVER PERFECTION

Experimentation, visibility and building tolerance for being seen.

Learning how to participate and share work without becoming performative, or fake or chronically online.

WEEK 5 — MORE THAN THE MANUSCRIPT

Opportunities, momentum and creating a richer writing life beyond publication.

Because books matter but they don't have to carry your entire creative existence on their own.

Why I created this

After publishing four books, co-hosting The First Time podcast and interviewing more than 150 writers, I noticed something:

Writing and publishing novels transformed my life

But they weren't the only things that did

Some of the most meaningful experiences of my creative career came from things I did alongside the books.

Like, a podcast

Or learning to interview people

Or sharing ideas publicly

Even the '100 cartoons in 100 days' challenge I announced I was doing and didn't even finish

None of these things started with a grand plan

But each one opened doors, taught me something new and expanded what was possible

Over time, I became interested in what happens when writers stop waiting for publication to be the only source of possibility in their creative lives

What writers say about Katherine's work

'It feels like I’ve had a complete motivation reset.'

— Published author (name withheld)

'A redefining artistic journey.'

— Megan Howden

'My story is better because of our sessions — and so is my attitude towards writing.'

“As someone who had been burned by the publishing process, you broke down each step of writing a book with warmth, realism and genuinely thoughtful advice.”

— Two-time author (name withheld)

This is not about:

  • becoming a full-time internet person
  • forcing yourself to post while quietly dreading it
  • taking 37 photos for Instagram before deciding your face looks strange in all of them
  • opening social media 'for five minutes' and accidentally losing your writing session
  • turning 'building a platform' into a very sophisticated form of procrastination

It is about making interesting things

Sharing them

And being a bit more visible than feels entirely comfortable

Your next book matters

But it doesn't have to be the only place your creativity or ideas get to exist

Main Character Energy is for writers who want to share ideas, create interesting things and participate more fully in literary life while their books are still taking shape

Because publication is a milestone

Not a waiting room
